I have been hooked on to a series Emily in Paris on Netflix.
By the end of Season 2, I was convinced I wanted her life.
Independent,
Living on her own terms,
Shining at work,
Exploring beautiful cafes,
No household responsibilities,
No endless cycle of work, chores, planning, and more chores.
From where I sit, juggling family, work, responsibilities, and the invisible load of running a home, Emily’s life looked perfect.
Then came a two-day work trip. Ta-da! A temporary escape from household responsibilities.
Work,
A little free time,
No one asking what’s for dinner,
No laundry,
No planning,
No managing.
Just me. Or so I thought. But when I got there, I did almost nothing.
I missed my boys,
I missed my home,
I missed discussing dinner,
I even missed the chores I complain about.
Instead of exploring the city, I found myself wanting to get back to my room.
And that’s when it struck me. Maybe we don’t really want someone else’s life.
We just want a vacation from our own.
From a distance, other lives look glamorous. Up close, the life we have built is often the one our heart quietly chooses.
The things that feel like responsibilities are sometimes the very things that make us feel needed, connected, and at home.
Turns out, I didn’t want Emily’s life. I just wanted a short commercial break from mine.
In trying to find Emily, I found myself. Not the daughter, wife, mother, leader or friend.
Just a woman who discovered that the life she occasionally wants a break from is also the life she never wants to leave.
